Foursquare City Guide

I used to write all of the words for the Foursquare City Guide app. It’s the best way to get personalized recommendations and tips anywhere in the world.

Working closely with the design and research teams, I made sure that we’re speaking to our global user base in a clear, consistent, and approachable manner (in 12 languages!).

I was responsible for everything touching the App Store/Google Play Store screenshots, screenshot copy, description copy, release notes and experiments, and anything in between.

Here are a few things I loved working on:

The personal recommendations sent to users are a part of the Special Sauce in the Foursquare City Guide App. I revamped hundreds of push notifications. Turns out people seemed to like ’em too! The copy refresh led to 3% increase in venue views on Android and 9% increase in venue views on iOS. Pretty exciting stuff.

This is our Venue Rating Transparency Modal…. which is fancy speak for “how the sausage is made” regarding ratings at places. This was a pretty utilitarian project to work on, but I was so happy with the way it turned out, giving insight to the community.

I worked with the Design team to rethink all of our empty states. The UX was bad, there was no clear messaging. And it seemed like the hadn’t been revisited in years. (Because it hadn’t been.)  This was weirdly exciting for me because I just love tearing things apart.

The update to this screen led 12% more iOS users and 34% more Android users to allow location services, which is a key component to having a successful experience in Foursquare, and is also valuable from a company goal per$pective as well.
